Nico 1974 Peel Session

I seem to only do requests these days, and here's another. The first Nico Peel Session was released on Strange Fruit in the late 1980's and was the first time I heard any of her solo stuff. Astonishingly dark with wheezing harmonium and elongated vowels. I probably heard the word "teutonic" for the first time when I saw it reviewed. Or maybe that was a Michael Schenker Group review in Kerrang circa 1984?

Her second session was never released, so here it is. I remember reading on Henry Rollins blog that he wanted to hear a copy so I emailed him but he never replied. I guess he was probably busy lifting weights or frowning.

Three of the tracks came from the 1974 album "The End" but are just performed by just Nico, none of the Eno / Cale mucking about over the top. The 9 minute version of The Doors song is a masterclass in bleakness.

This is for Starman015

1. We've Got The Gold
2. Janitor Of Lunacy
3. The End
4. You Forgot To Answer

Recorded 3rd December 1974

Thanks so much for this. I've heard a version of Sãeta apparently from a 1981 Peel session, but like her 71 session, there is nothing on the BBC Peel site, or anywhere else. Do you know anything more about it?

There was no Peel Session in 1981, of that I think we can be sure. The only other BBC session was recorded at the same time as the first Peel Session (for the Stuart Henry show)

The 1981 radio session featuring Saeta is almost certainly the one she did for the local Manchester Picadilly Radio. I don't have a copy but would like to hear it.

Thanks for the info. I have the version of Sãeta from the Reich Der Traume and Death & the Maiden boots (If you don't have it I'd gladly give it to you), which both claim to be from Peel. Annoying. Also annoying that the Peel site doesn't list the first session, which is bizarre as that site has so many date. Do you have the Stuart Henry show? Her sessions are amazing. I am really enjoying the 74 one, so thank you again.

I had a tape with SAETA, slower version which came from a Peel Session- must have been around 81. Would love to get it.

I may have the answer to the riddle of the Peel version of Saeta, because I remember hearing it when Peel aired it for the first time and I was already a huge Nico fan. It was a Rip, Rig and Panic Session and for some strange reason they had the version of Saeta as the intro to one of their tracks.

Yes I was right it is on a 1981 Rip Rig and Panic session, on a track called Pullover No Sox - officially released, available in iTunes

Thanks a lot, Nico's songs are the best I've heard in my whole live.
